WILMINGTON, Ohio
January 2009
The town of Wilmington - Ohio, has been hit very hard by this economic crisis. Being the major hub for DHL in the USA, when in mid-December the firm decided to end its US domestic freight operations it was a major shock for the entire town. DHL laid off more than 9,000 employee nation wide, of which about 7500 in Wilmington only. According to The Economist, almost 10,000 jobs can be lost as a consequence of DHL decision-making. And according to the 2000 census, the total population of Wilmington barely reached 11,921. For most of the people the future looks uncertain, many small business were forced to shut down and the population fear that this farmer’s center will soon become a ghost town. In the meantime, DHL, is no where to be seen.
