THE SISTERS OF PERPETUAL INDULGENCE
The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are a group of LGBT artists, activists and self described 21st century nuns that work to advance human rights and liberal issues related to their communities. It is an international network founded in San Francisco in 1979 in the renownly gay neighborhood of Castro, when “three men wen out in the streets to challenge the world.” Now they have over 600 sisters worldwide and members in at least thirteen US states as well as eight countries on five continents. They engage in a lot of fundrasing work, not only serving the queer and sex positive community, but also distributing it to mainstream organizations such as the Red Cross or women’s breast cancer charities. The most active is the San Francisco Sisters of who have raised well over $1,000,000.
